The Congress of the People (COPE) is a political party in South Africa, established in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The formation of COPE was a direct result of dissatisfaction and factional splits within the ANC, particularly…   after the controversial ousting of then-President Thabo Mbeki. The founders of COPE, including prominent figures such as Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa, aimed to create a political alternative that would embody the principles of democracy, accountability, and integrity, which they felt were being eroded in the ANC.<br /><br />COPE positions itself as a centrist party, advocating for policies that promote social justice, economic development, and the eradication of poverty and inequality. The party values the principles enshrined in the South African Constitution, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and ensuring that governance is transparent, responsive, and accountable to the people.<br /><br />One of the core values of COPE is the belief in a non-racial, unified South African society. The party rejects any form of discrimination and division based on race, ethnicity, or social status, promoting instead a vision of inclusivity and diversity. The party believes in the importance of balancing market-driven growth with social welfare programs to address the needs of the vulnerable.<br /><br />Despite its promising start and the significant political experience of its leaders, COPE has struggled to establish a substantial presence in South African politics, facing internal disputes and challenges in building a broad-based support.
