The Congress of the People (COPE) is a political party in South Africa, established in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The founders of COPE, including prominent figures such as Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa, aimed to create a political alternative that would embody the principles of democracy, accountability, and integrity, which they felt were being eroded in the ANC.<br /><br />COPE positions itself as a centrist party, advocating for policies that promote social justice, economic development, and the eradication of poverty and inequality.
