The Congress of the People (COPE) is a political party in South Africa, established in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The formation of COPE was a direct result of dissatisfaction and factional splits within the ANC, particularly…   after the controversial ousting of then-President Thabo Mbeki. The founders of COPE, including prominent figures such as Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa, aimed to create a political alternative that would embody the principles of democracy, accountability, and integrity, which they felt were being eroded in the ANC.<br /><br />COPE positions itself as a centrist party, advocating for policies that promote social justice, economic development, and the eradication of poverty and inequality.
